Trusting the “Knowing Field”
The “knowing field” is a term created by Albrecht Mahr, a German physician, psychoanalyst and leader in Family Constellation work. The “knowing field” is the constellation energy field. This field of energy informs the facilitator, representatives, client, and those observing the constellation of what may be affecting the consciousness of the client. It is this informing knowledge that guides the constellation along its way toward the best possible outcome for all those involved.
In our lives, the “knowing field” is all that surrounds us at any given moment. It is made up of the people in our life and the situations we are in. We are within the field at all times. The field is informing us at all times and the field is guiding us at all times along our life’s path. These different energy fields represent different parts of our lives. They can be separate and act independently from each other but are all interconnected and over-lapping to greater and lesser degrees.
In a constellation, the representatives chosen are directly related to the issue the client presents. Once a constellation is ‘set up,’ the facilitator and client first observe the field. Then the representatives are asked what they are sensing within themselves and in relation to each other before the client enters the constellation. These two acts — seeing and hearing the ‘knowledge’ that the field presents — can guide the constellation toward the best interest of the client. In other words, the field points the direction for the client to follow. Often, the direction is not comfortable but it is usually necessary for clarity or healing to be achieved.
Exercise:
Take a few moments and identify a few of the energy fields that make up your life: family of origin, current family, work, friends, and so on. Identify the people within those fields. Write down on separate pieces of paper the names of the fields. Next, write the names of the people that make up the fields on separate pieces of paper. Place them down and see how they overlap. Choose one particular field that you would like to work with and put the others aside. Gather the pieces of paper that make up that field. Slowly, place these representatives down one at a time. Quiet your mind. First, observe the greater field, then each person’s individually.
What is the field showing you? What do you observe in each person? What is each person informing you? Let this knowledge come to you in any manner that it does — words, visions, feelings, thoughts, memories. Now write your own name on a piece of paper and place it in the constellation energy field. Observe and listen. Finally, ask this ‘knowing field,” what is in my best interest at this time?
Allow yourself to do this exercise with each of your “knowing fields.”
